Thousands of Irish Business Owners Retiring
July 10, 2026As temperatures rise and more people swap their usual latte for an iced coffee, many of us are once again noticing the price of our favourite caffeine fix. A takeaway coffee that might once have cost around €3 can now easily set you back €5 or more.
It would be easy to assume this is simply a case of cafés charging higher prices, but the reality is much more interesting.
That iced coffee in your hand is the end product of a truly global supply chain. The cost of producing it is influenced by everything from Irish wages, rents and energy bills to weather patterns on the other side of the world.
Coffee beans themselves have become significantly more expensive in recent years. Poor harvests and drought conditions in major coffee-producing countries, particularly Vietnam and Brazil, pushed global coffee prices sharply higher. At the same time, disruption to international shipping routes increased transport and insurance costs.
Then there are the costs much closer to home. Cafés are dealing with higher payroll expenses, increased energy costs, rising insurance premiums and more expensive packaging. Even a small increase across several of these areas can have a noticeable impact on the price of a cup of coffee.
There is some good news. Global coffee prices have eased somewhat this year, helped by expectations of a stronger harvest in Brazil. However, that does not necessarily mean your iced coffee is about to become cheaper. Commodity price changes often take time to work their way through the supply chain, and Irish businesses are still facing significant cost pressures of their own. See this article on RTÉ for more details.
For business owners, there is a useful reminder here. Sometimes the price of a simple everyday purchase tells a much bigger story about the economy. A cup of iced coffee is no longer just beans, milk and ice – it is a snapshot of global supply chains, climate challenges and rising business costs, all condensed into a drink that disappears in a few refreshing minutes.
